Keeping Our Furry Neighbors Safe This Summer – A Community Guide

As it’s getting hotter outside, it’s important that you and your neighbors collaborate together to keep all of your pets safe. Summer is a time for barbecues, walks and outdoor fun, but it can be a huge risk if your pets are not safe while being a part of these fun summer activities. Here are some tips to keep your pets safe this summer. Please share!

Community Tips for Pet Safety:
  • Stay Cool Together: Organizing neighborhood “pet playdates” in shaded parks during cooler hours (early morning or evening). Provide portable water stations at community events or setting up kiddie pools for dogs to splash in to avoid heatstroke.
  • Paw Patrol Walks: Check local neighborhood walking paths for hot pavement and share safe routes via a community app or group chat. Use pet booties or sticking to grassy areas.
  • Hydration Stations: Set up water bowls outside their homes for passing pets with permission from all the neighbors. Print out a “Pet Hydration Station” and post it everywhere to draw attention.
  • Pest Protection Network: Watch out for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Have a community bulletin board (physical or online) to share vet recommendations or pest alerts in the local parks.
  • Watch Out for Hazards: Be mindful of fireworks, toxic plants, or barbecue scraps. Encourage neighbors to alert each other about upcoming events (like Fourth of July displays) that might stress pets, so that everyone can plan to keep animals indoors during those hours.
  • Grooming and Care Tips: Go to your local groomers or pet stores for summer-safe grooming. Having “pet pamper day” where owners share tips on pet-safe sunscreen or cooling mats can truly be of value.
