While there’s been low inventory across America, homeowners who are thinking about selling haven’t moved quite yet. Reason? Interest rates. While interest rates have jumped from the 2%’s to almost 7%’s since the pandemic, rates are historically lower than they were in the 1980s, when they were at 18%. There are still buyers out their looking to purchase in this market, so most homes are selling over asking in multiple offers. Most homeowners are sitting on tons of equity!

68.7% of homeowners have paid off their mortgage or have at least 50% equity on their homes, according to the latest reports from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), the Census, and ATTOM.

If you’ve owned your home for many years, you most definitely have enough money to either buy all-cash or provide a larger down payment on your new home. If you offer a large down payment, your lender could give you a lower interest rate. This will all depend on where you want to move to.
